Magami Academy in Shinjuku, Tokyo is not a normal high school; many of the students there possess supernatural abilities, and Tatsuma Hiyū, who has just transferred there, is no exception. However, shortly after Tatsuma's arrival, strange powers begin to awaken in Tokyo, and demons appear which threaten the peace and safety of the city. Not everyone who possesses these powers has good intentions, and Tatsuma and his allies must fight to protect the city not just from the demons, but from those who would use their powers for evil. Tokyo Majin Gakuen: Kenpūchō is a hybrid adventure and strategy game, which revolves around a group of high school students with supernatural powers. The strategy combat sequences are a standard isometric tactics affair, with the player controlling their allies in turn-based combat to defeat enemy formations. The meat of the game is the adventure parts, which tell the story through extended visual novel-style sequences. The signature feature of the game and series is the "emotional response" system; rather than choosing from a list of dialogue choices, the game will occasionally prompt the player to choose from one of nine emotional reactions to another character, ranging from warm and friendly to cold and distant, or even to outright ignore them entirely. These reactions have a dramatic affect on the characters' relationships, which in turn affects which story events occur, which characters will join as allies, and ultimately the game's ending.
