Tokyo Majin Gakuen: Gehōchō is the second main game in the Tokyo Majin series, and a prequel to Kenpūchō which moves the setting from present-day Tokyo to 19-century Edo during the turbulent Bakumatsu period in the 19th century. It depicts the story's origins; many of the characters are ancestors of those from the previous game, and the founding of Magami Academy is a central story element. The main character is Tatsuto Hiyū, ancestor of the first game's protagonist, who has just arrived in Edo. The player is able to align with one of two factions — the Ryusen Group, which is backed by the shogunate, and the Kido group, which aims to overthrow it — and each story chapter is depicted in both "Yin" and "Yang" counterparts, allowing the player to see both sides of the story on multiple playthroughs. Gameplay-wise, Gehōchō is extremely similar to Kenpūchō, once again combining adventure and strategy elements. Battle sequences play out in a standard turn-based isometric tactical format, while the adventure sequences incorporate the series' signature emotional response system that allows the player to determine how to respond to other characters, resulting in dramatic changes to the characters' relationships and how events play out.
