Gionbana is a digital version of three popular two-player card games played with Japanese hanafuda cards: Koi-Koi, Hana-Awase, and Oicho-Kabu. It differs significantly from Nichibutsu's earlier arcade release of the same title. The game offers three main play modes: Free Battle mode lets the player choose one of 16 different characters, adjust the rule and scoring settings, and play any of the three games against the computer. Tournament mode tasks the player with defeating a series of five computer opponents in either Koi-Koi or Hana-Awase. Sugoroku mode is a turn-based board game for two to four players where each player moves around the board by rolling a die. Each space causes various events or mini-games to occur that affect the player's score or the flow of the game.
