Sōuzaikan is a large mountain, divided into many layers, where a great many people live peacefully. However, one day, a villain named Warumonda and his gang appeared, seizing control of Sōuzaikan and shattering its peace. Legend says that when Sōuzaikan is threatened, a savior will appear from another world, and just as was foretold, a boy named Wataru Homurabe has appeared. Wataru must travel to the peak of Sōuzaikan with his companions Sakuya and Aragoto, and using the power of the mech Ryūjinmaru, defeat Warumonda and bring peace back to the world. Chō Mashin Eiyūden Wataru: Another Step is a turn-based JRPG based on the 1997 animated series Chō Mashin Eiyūden Wataru. The game is divided into 14 self-contained episodes, with the player exploring various locations from an isometric perspective. Enemies are visible on the map prior to combat, which takes place in three different forms. Combat against regular enemies takes place in a standard turn-based format, with the player's team and the enemy team taking turns selection actions for each character. Some bosses are fought in "IQ Battle" mode, which takes the form of one of four different minigames such as a Simon-style memory game and a sliding-tile game. Finally, major bosses are fought in "Mashin Battle" mode, in which Wataru battles 1-on-1 with the boss in his mech, Ryūjinmaru, in turn-based combat. Characters level up linearly and can acquire and equip new gear. There is also a monster collection and training element: creatures called "Monpets" can be found and used in battle to assist in combat, and these creatures can also rank up to increase their strength.
