The continent of Leafland, in the world of Wishbone, is home to five nations and many people. Duke Reston, of the Principality of Mountish, has proposed marriage to the princess of the Foresti Kindgom but, after King Baird of Foresti rejects the offer, the princess is kidnapped. A young boy from Foresti, Rick, has set out to rescue the princess along with his fairy guide Milia and his bearcat friend Elle. Mori no Ōkoku is a fantasy-themed tactical RPG in the vein of Final Fantasy Tactics. The game is divided into three major segments: in the world map, the player can select destinations to travel to, view their party's status and adjust equipment, and check the status of the world. Towns in each country can be explored on foot, with a variety of shops to buy equipment and items, and NPCs who can be talked with to gain information; some towns also have churches where fallen party members can be revived. Field maps are where the game's combat takes place. Combat takes place in an isometric turn-based format. Characters are arranged in a starting grid, then moved in order and have a certain number of action points per turn; depending on how far the character is moved, they can also perform a single action such as attacking or using an item or magic spell, and even move again if any points remain. Each encounter has a specific objective, usually to eliminate all enemy units. The game has fog-of-war system, where enemies are only visible if they are in a player unit's line of sight. The main overarching system of the game is the "Darkness Dominance" system; each location in the game has a darkness level, which increases over time and can be lowered by defeating monsters in that area. If the darkness level of any country reaches maximum, war breaks out and the game is over. Additional character join the player's party throughout the story, and characters gain experience in three different categories — Battle (physical attacks), Magic, and Adventure (item use and discovery) — which affects their class and which abilities they learn.
